STORY TIME: Have Your CAKE and READ It Too!

IMG_2328This coming Wednesday at 9:30 I will again be the guest reader at the Southside Roast where I hope to get little tummies hungry for good books with a sure-to-please theme: CAKE!

Just in case you’d like to taste what I’ve got baking, here’s my delectable selection of cake-themed picture books.  Grab a fork and dig in:

WHOPPER CAKE, written by Karma Wilson and illustrated by Will Hillenbrand, is the hilarious tale of what happens when Granddad decides to bake Grandma a birthday cake.  For the daring, it even includes a recipe at the end. (Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2007)

BETTY BUNNY LOVES CHOCOLATE CAKE, written by Michael B. Kaplan and illustrated by Stéphane Jorisch, captures the essence of just how hard it is to wait for a piece of cake.  For Betty Bunny, that wait is impossible, with delightfully funny results. (Dial Books for Young Readers, 2011)

A BIRTHDAY FOR COW, written and illustrated by Jan Thomas, will tickle the littlest bones as Duck keeps trying to add a turnip to the cake Pig and Mouse are making for Cow.  (Harcourt, Inc., 2007)

In PIGGIES IN THE KITCHEN, written by Michelle Meadows and illustrated by Ard Hoyt, five little piggies make a raucous mess in the kitchen while Mama is out for the day.  What will Mama think of their creations? (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2011)

IF YOU GIVE A CAT A CUPCAKE, written by Laura Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond, is the delightful circle tale of all the things that might happen if you’re daring enough to give that darling-looking cat a cupcake. (Laura Geringer Books, 2008)

PINKALICIOUS, written and illustrated by the Kann sisters, cleverly imagines what might happen if one ate too many pink cupcakes. (HarperCollins Publishers, 2006)

Finally, THE DUCHESS BAKES A CAKE, written and illustrated by Virginia Kahl, is one my my childhood favorites about what happens the day the duchess (who knows nothing about baking) bakes a cake. (Purple House Press, 1955, 1983)

  1. What a wonderful list! I’m adding these to my own list! I have read a couple of them, but it will be fun to reread them along with the others on your list!
By the way, I hope you enjoyed being the guest reader! Sounds like fun!
